On the Spiritual Journey

I have been on my spiritual journey my whole life, searching for answers and praying that I would find them. I was raised a Catholic and never really felt at home. I left the church at age 12 with my family in search of another church. We never really found it. However I did return to church at the age of 26 in search of my people. I stayed there for about 4 years. I never felt comfortable. Every time I turned around I was doing something wrong. I felt judged and like everyone was frustrated with me for even showing up. This was wrong. This was not how church was supposed to be. They were supposed to be your people. The people who stood by you and answered your “stupid” questions. I had an amazing spiritual connection to God and I always felt peace while in prayer. However as soon as I stepped outside of prayer it was instant outsider and panic attack. So I left, and I wandered.

I have always been drawn to the spiritual and the supernatural. I have always been gifted in that I have seen and felt spirits since I was a little girl. Never understood these gifts and why me. I was always told that spirits are evil and you can not talk to God because “most likely” you are talking to the devil. Do not invoke St. Michael because it is really a demon. I never understood this because in Catholicism you pray,

Holy Michael the archangel, defend us in battle…

So if in Catholic prayer you are praying to the Archangel Michael, Then if you said something like,

Holy Michael, I invoke you in my time of need, please send me your light of protection and act as a shield against my enemy.

Would that not be the same thing? Do Catholics not use incense and candles? So if I am at home using sage and candles, is that not the same thing? Is prayer not prayer? Why is one the right way and one the wrong way?

So in my journey and while I was searching, I was begging for guidance, “Please Jesus send me someone who I can relate to and that will show me what is and what I can be. This is when I found Athena Perrakis from Sage Goddess. I had been dabbling outside of my tiny Catholic world for a while. Athena showed up at just the right time, with exactly what I had been looking for. I think there is right in every religion and there is no one way to do things.

This will be about my journey and any who wish to follow. I have found more peace then I have known in a long time. This is the beginning of part 2 of my journey and I am excited to delve into the world of Light and Magic and expand my learning. In honor of where I am at in my Journey I will give away one charging plate for December Desiderata Charging Plate only pay shipping. Giveaway will end November 31st at Midnight.

How to make your own Herbal Hand Sanitizer

Let’s talk germs! Everyone knows that prevention is way better then the cure! Everyone washes their hands more then enough to keep germs at bay. We even use those convenient store bought chemical laden hand sanitizers we see sitting so pretty on the shelves at Wal-mart.

However! There is a better way to get our hands clean and germ free then lathering Trisclosan, the active ingredient in hand sanitizer, all over your hands. This effectively kills any good bacteria lowering your body’s natural defenses to all the bad bacteria. This also increases the body’s absorption of a dangerous chemical!

There are always germs to worry about! However if we make our own hand sanitizer we can rest in the knowledge that we know what we are putting into our bodies via our skin.

Try the following sanitizer as a safe alternative to the harsh chemicals found lining the shelves of our supermarkets!

1/2 C organic aloe vera gel
2 teaspoons Herbal infused oil
1 teaspoon Thyme tincture
10 drops lavender essential oil
10 drops eucalyptus essential oil

1. Add the Aloe Vera and and herbal infused oil together and whisk.
2. Then add the Thyme and essential oils to the Aloe Vera mixture.
3. Place in a container of your choosing and enjoy!

Simple easy recipe for your own Hand sanitizer 🙂 Now I wonder if the children’s school will accept this…

How to Harvest Herbs

There are many ways to harvest herbs. Here we will look at just one way of doing it.

You will need the following items to gather your herbs

  1. Plant identification book
  2. Scissors or clippers
  3. A shovel or garden spade
  4. Linen bags or a basket
  5. Gloves

Remember to always pick respectfully.  Be sure not to damage the plant or over harvest. Be sure to leave plenty for wildlife and next year.

Pick your herbs on a day that is bright and dry.

Do not pick plants that are sickly looking or have mold.

Be sure you are 100% sure that you have identified your plant properly

If after drying your herbs they do not still have some fragrant smell or smell musty of moldy, discard of these clippings.

Now to dry your plants.

Do not dry your herbs in the sunlight. Always use somewhere dry and dark.

You can always string your herbs into small bunches and hang upside down to dry them. This is both a pretty way to dry them and efficient.

•Paper bags

In addition to string, you can use a paper bad to place the herbs that seed and drop loose parts. This way they do not fall on the floor and make a mess.

•Drying Rack

You can also purchase herb drying racks for larger amounts of herbs. Or you can make your own using a large wooden picture frame with kitchen linen towels stapled into it.

If you are in a hurry, or, like me, just impatient you can buy and use a dehydrator. This will be quick and done overnight. You can also use a baking sheet placed in the oven on the lowest setting with the oven door cracked to let out moisture. Make sure that when you take them out they are just hardened not burnt. This could be done with thicker parts of the plant. IE Stems, roots, fruits, and seeds.

Building your Apothecary with Myrrh

Proverbs 7:17

I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

Let’s start with the history of Myrrh. Myrrh shows up in Biblical times. It is one of the gifts given by the Magi to the Infant Jesus. In the new testament Myrhh is used as incense to celebrate through out the Christian Liturgical year. It has been used as a perfume incense and a medicine. Myrrh is a resin that comes from the Commiphora Myrrha tree. You can find this tree growing in the Middle East in Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, Oman, Yemen, Entrea, and Somalia.

Myrrh is quite verstaile! It can be used in oral care, such as mouthwash, gargles, and toothpaste. You can also use it for toothaches. You can use it in salves for cuts, scrapes and bruises.

Myrrh has been used medicinally for thousands of years! It has been used in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine.

Ayurvedic Medicine bases its priniciples that people are made up of three different doshas, or energies. Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. To find out your Doshic type follow the link.

What’s your Dosha type?

Myrrh is an anti-fungal antiviral and antimicrobial. It kills bacteria, fungus and other dangerous microbes. To use this oil to protect from germs and bacteria, combine 2 drops of Myrhh along with coconut oils to skin abrasions such as wounds, cuts, and athlete’s foot will help them from getting infected.  You can use Myrhh for fighting all kinds of infections from, cough to diarrhea, cold to even measles and pox.

It can also boost your  immunity and help to battle cancer. To fight free radicals like above mix 2 drops of essential oil with coconut oil and rub on the affected parts of your body. You can also diffuse this oil for a pick me up.

Myrrh also aids with respiratory problems like cold, asthma, sinus infections, cough, sore throat, congestion, bronchitis and problems breathing.  Add 2 drops of Myrrh to steaming hot water, and inhale to relieve chest congestion and phlegm.

My grandmother has rheumatoid arthritis, I have given her Myrrh to lessen the pain. With its anti-inflammatory properties the swelling and pain have reduced and she has gotten some mobility back in her arthritic fingers.

I have used it for my daughters eczema. She had it really bad on her hands and in 1 day of using Myrrh diluted with almond oil lavender, tea tree and frankincense oil her hands were almost completely cleared from her eczema.
